Lewis Carroll's Alice Books
with Jerome Bump

Jerome Bump, professor at U.T. since 1970, has been awarded a number of research fellowships and four teaching awards. He was an editor of Texas Studies in Language and Literature and his publications include a book, an edition, and sixty articles and chapters. His latest publication is “Biophilia and Emotive Ethics: Derrida, Alice, and Animals“ (Ethics and the Environment 12/2014). He will begin with the assertion that both Derrida and Carroll were geniuses and move on, as time permits, to the open question of why Derrida said his famous ten-hour philosophy lecture on the man/animal boundary could be inscribed in a reading of the works of Lewis Carroll.

The Technology Behind Augmented Reality
with Bruce Naylor

This presentation will explore the technology involved in creating Augmented Reality. The focus will be on the fundamental issues that any serious AR system must address, now and in the future. We will discuss both software and hardware aspects, including smart glasses, such as the Microsoft Hololens and Magic Leap’s optical lenses. The talk will be targeted at anyone comfortable reading and thinking  about technology.

Dr. Bruce Naylor is a Computer Scientist with 35 years of experience spanning academia, industrial R&D, and hi-tech start-ups. He has served on the Computer Science faculty at Georgia Tech and U. of Texas at Austin, and spent 10 years in the research division of AT&T Bell Labs (Murray Hill). He also started two companies during the dot-com boom, one of which was in Silicon Valley. His area of expertise has been centered on 3D real-time interactive graphics technology. The greatest commercial impact of his work has been in games, where it has provided an essential component in hundreds of products, the most successful being DOOM, Quake, Call of Duty and Half-Life. Current work is focused on applying this technology, called BSP Trees, to Augmented Reality.

In this presentation, Chris Kilgore will present a survey of Surrealist art. Surrealist artworks will be analyzed in terms of their artistic precedents, technical approaches, and thematic elements. In addition, Surrealism will be addressed in terms of the artists, their personalities, and the way in which their relationships and conflicts influenced the movement's evolution.

Name That Movie
with John and Geri Neemidge

A LonestaRG favorite, Name That Movie consists of clips (about a minute each) from around 40 movies. Clips are selected to fit into one or more themes. You name the movies and the themes. You can participate individually or in teams. Clips are PG or less regardless of the original  movie, and we try to make the clips themselves interesting, so you can enjoy it even if you don't know movies well enough to do well on the game.
